Hero Boxes was established by Karen Cote of Berlin, CT. She began sending care packages overseas every Thanksgiving after her son was deployed to Kuwait in 2015. To date, she has sent over 600 boxes which arrive just in time to be distributed to the soldiers right before Christmas. “It just keeps getting bigger and bigger,” Cote says. She sent 125 boxes to her son’s unit in her first year of operation. This past year she organized a committee of volunteers, and hosted over 400 community members at the local VFW for “Giving Thanks to our Troops night”. Volunteers helped individually wrap toiletries, snacks and gifts for a record number of 200 care packages. “It’s just been amazing… it just makes you feel good, as a military mom,” says Cote.
Our committee members proudly volunteer their efforts for the common goal: to hopefully bring smiles to our soldiers who cannot be home with their families for the holidays. What makes our organization so special is that we have so many individuals that contribute so many talents. So much thought and love goes into each one of our care packages. Every committee member contributes in his own way to our fundraising efforts through donation collections, creating special boxes, right down to packaging and shipping of all the boxes. We know that to some of our soldiers, receiving a care package is the only connection to home they have. Our soldiers are our heroes. These Hero Boxes are a sign of our appreciation and support.
